Best of Sparta
Most people are familiar with the Greek islands but have you thought of visiting mainland Greece?
The Peloponnese is a Southern Greek peninsula and the most popular region of the Greek mainland in terms of tourism. Three hours drive from Athens; it is a beautiful, mountainous and surprisingly green part of this delightful country. It a very different to the stark beauty of the most popular islands like Santorini. It hosts many important archaeological sites, charming villages and seaside resorts. Hiking is a popular activity here but there are other attractions too.

On our trip we visited the magnificent region of Sparta – the birthplace of democracy. The Sparta region of Greece is where history, culture, and natural beauty seamlessly blend to create an intriguing destination. With its idyllic landscapes, ancient ruins, and warm Mediterranean climate, Sparta offers activities that will captivate your senses and leave you with unforgettable memories.
History of Sparta
Sparta, known for its legendary past and proud warrior heritage, is also the birthplace of democracy. Indeed the mayor of Sparta informed us that the term ‘Commander in Chief,’ used in the US for their president, came from the government of ancient Sparta. We met the very well informed Mayor of Sparta at the Olive Oil museum.

The Archaeological Museum of Sparta is definitely worth a visit, as is the remains of the Spartan acropolis, now just ruins, surrounded by ancient olive trees and spring flowers. It also affords a spectacular view out over the city and the stunning mountain range behind it. The Spartans were fearless warriors – you may have seen the film 300. The actor Gerard Butler played the Spartan king Leonides in that film. I have it on good authority that he was also a recent guest at a certain wellness resort in these parts..

Natural Sparta
For nature enthusiasts, the rugged and picturesque landscapes of Sparta offer endless opportunities for exploration. Lace up your hiking boots and embark on an adventure through the majestic Taygetos Mountains. Take the well-marked trails that wind through lush forests, past glistening waterfalls, and alongside crystal-clear streams. This is a great place for walkers and for those who enjoy flora and fauna. Indeed I spotted a wild Greek tortoise while I was there!

Mystras
One jewel of the Sparta region is the awe-inspiring Mystras, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Perched on a hillside, this abandoned medieval city enchants with its impressive fortifications, Byzantine churches, and palaces. Take a leisurely stroll through the narrow cobblestone streets, listening to the echoes of history that resonate through the centuries-old walls. Vibrant frescoes and paintings adorn the walls and ceilings of the small churches perched precariously on the cliff. It is quite a steep and rocky climb so do make sure you are wearing comfortable shoes! In the spring the whole landscape is peppered with gorgeous wildflowers.
The Euphoria Retreat

A short drive from the dramatic ruins of Mystras you will find a very special retreat indeed. Purpose built with holistic wellness in mind, it is the fabulous Euphoria Retreat. Nestled in its own private forest, this is Europe’s leading wellbeing destination spa and hotel.
The brainchild of Greek entrepreneur Marina Efraimoglou, this very private retreat has already hosted noted Hollywood celebrities. This reflects the level of luxury and service available here. There are a number of different retreats and programmes on offer for those staying for five days or more. One which caught my eye was the Odysseyian journey retreat. This is designed to take you on your own inner journey and discover your own Ithaca or homecoming. Much of the philosophy here is focused on the five elements (water, air, fire earth and metal)
Eating at Euphoria

The food here is a la carte and quite delicious. All meals are served daily in the Gaia restaurant. You can opt for the healthy menu if you are here for weight loss, or tuck into delightful dishes like squid ink pasta or a fantastic soup or salad. I took a particular liking to the orange pie. This dessert is a fresh orange and semolina concoction which is quite divine. Oranges and lemons are picked from Euphoria’s own orchard on the grounds and feature in a number of dishes.
The spa at Euphoria

The spa is definitely the star at Euphoria retreat. It features a James Bond like sphere in the middle of a pool surrounded by various water jets which focus on different parts of the body. The centre of the sphere echoes as the blue caves do on the island of Kastellorizo or in Capri. If you dive to the bottom of the blue pool in the middle of the sphere you can even hear whale sounds!
Treatments are luxurious. We enjoyed a five senses massage and a personal hammam. You can opt for a sound bath, yoga or visit the well equipped gym. The inside pool continues outside where you can swim up to a most stunning view out over the mountains. There is an outdoor hot tub and a full programme of fitness activities.

Accommodation at Euphoria
The rooms are spacious and decorated in calming colours. Suites are also available and the best spots give a view out of Mystras and the stunning valley below.
