Grand Hotel Du Golfe – South East France

Collioure – the artists’s choice

Situated right on the tip of the South east coast of France, the Hotel du Golfe is close to the seaside towns of Argelès-sur-Mer and Collieure in the Pyrénées-Orientales region, about 15 miles from Perpignan and the same distance from the Spanish border.

Cool coastal accommodation

Looking directly out over the Mediterranean sea, the hotel is a great place to stay if you want to explore this less high profile part of the French coast.

Seaside dreams
Hotel Du Golf Argeles has the cool retro exterior of a 1970’s TV series, but inside it is clean and colourful, well designed and ultra modern. All of the air conditioned rooms have a lovely sea view and many have a balcony too.

The hotel is just 6 minutes walk from the beach and is set on the Corniche (a road along the cliff) and opposite the Criques de Porteils, which hosts a huge very popular luxury camping site. The Grand Hotel Du Golfe is an art design hotel which has employed local Catalan artists in its interior design.

Bistro by the sea

The hotel dates from the 1970’s and is just 5 minutes’ walk from an area with local creeks and 10 minutes’ walk from Racou Beach. The seaside town of Argelès-sur-Mer is less than a mile away.
Each air-conditioned room has sea views and many feature a balcony. All of the modern guest rooms are soundproofed and include an LCD TV, a telephone, a hairdryer, free WiFi and a minibar.
The hotel restaurant, Le bistrot à la mer, is very good indeed and extremely popular with locals and visitors alike. It serves creative meals using fresh regional  produce. I had a monk fish dish which was delicately flavoured and melt in the mouth delicious.

Magnificent Monk fish mains

The Pot au Feu was also reported as first rate. Guests can enjoy a drink in the hotel lounge bar or on the terrace, weather permitting. The buffet breakfast is also particularly good with plenty of choice.

Breakfast bar

The hotel has a 20m outdoor heated pool and a Wellness Centre with a view over the Mediterranean sea and the vineyards. Spa treatments and a hammam are also available to complete your relaxation. There is also a Mediterranean garden, and the property can organise Languedoc Roussillon wine testing on request.

The historic town of Collioure is 1.2 miles from Grand Hotel Du Golfe. In the early 20th century Collioure became a centre of artistic activity and was popular with artists like Picasso, Derain, Matisse and Charles Renne Mackintosh. The lovely lighthouse, bay and the huge sky scape here are very beautiful.

Perfect pool
To the south of Argelès-Plage heading towards Collioure, is Racou (which means “corner” in Catalan). This is a little piece of beach paradise, and marks the end of the long swathe of sandy Languedoc-Roussillon beach as the coastal plains give way to the rocky outcrops of the Côte Vermeille. This beach is perfect for escaping the commercialism of its northern neighbour, but can get busy in the summer. There are a few cafes and restaurants offering refreshments, and no major activity bases here – le Racou is all about relaxing and enjoying the sunshine.
