Roxbro house – a luxury BnB
Roxbro House is a real luxury BnB. There aren’t many bed and breakfast establishments with a direct view out onto a real English castle. Roxbro House in the charming Northumberland town of Warkworth can boast just that!
There are several rooms to choose from, each individually designed and furnished in rich colours. I stay in the Ethel Noble room, named after a lady who lived here for many years. It has a huge carved oak French bed and a spacious bathroom. A cast iron slipper bath takes centre stage..

Roxbro House – keeping cosy
There is a shower as well as a bath and classic black and white tiling in the bathroom. In addition there are lovely fluffy robes, slippers and toiletries. The sheets are crisp Egyptian cotton and the quilts are cosy goose down. The majestic medieval Warkworth Castle is literally right outside your bedroom window. Clare Gibson and her family who run Roxbro House have been here for fourteen years now. Clare tells me that the majority of their guests are repeat visitors, because they love it here, and you can see why.

This room has been designed with pure indulgent luxury in mind. A larger than average main room which directly overlooks the Warkworth Castle will house a rather decadent 6 foot wide carved oak half tester bed.

The large en-suite bathroom will boast a large deep cast iron double ended slipper bath- separate shower cubicle with power shower, a large vanity basin and a low level Victorian W. C. This luxurious bathroom will also directly overlook Warkworth Castle.
This room comes with a private mini bar and fridge, large flat screen LCD television,DVD player and ipod docking station. Warm fluffy towels, slippers, bathrobes and luxurious toiletries are of course standard to the bathroom.

Breakfast at Roxbro House
Rooms are luxurious and there’s a delicious breakfast menu, served in the garden room. The full English option is available. Other options include smoked haddock or eggs Benedict. The pancakes with maple syrup and crispy bacon are delicious.

Where to eat
You can even sample afternoon tea at Roxbro House too. There is no evening restaurant at the B&B itself but there is an option for you to order from a selection of hot food and have a ‘room picnic’ delivered to your door!

Roxbro House – Warkworth village
There are lovely walks in the village along the river Coquet. It also has quite a few coffee shops with little art galleries and gift shops to browse around. There’s no shortage of pubs either. The Mason Arms gets a special mention for its food. The Sun pub is notable for its life size knight in armour which welcomes you at the front door.

Warkworth Castle – English Heritage
Warkworth Castle, has been in the custody of English Heritage since 1984. Set a top a protective mound, the castle started life as a medieval fortification. The castle is a Grade 1 listed building. It also has a complicated past as part of the the Duke of Northumberland’s dynasty in the late 19th Century. The castle mound famously bursts into life with a girdle of daffodils in the spring.
Roxbro house – a coastal favourite
Warkworth beach is one of my favourite North East beaches. Its dramatic windswept sand dunes stretch for miles along the bay. As you reach the end of the main beach, you come upon the river estuary inlet. From here you can see across to the village of Alnmouth on the other side of the water.
If it is low tide you can sometimes paddle across the village without too much difficulty.
Roxbro House – a charming visit
The golf course is on top of the hill where the sand dunes finish. Wildflowers sprinkle the farm land in the spring and summer fringing the way back to the car park. An old Celtic cross stands as a testament to the Christian history of this part of the world.

Roxbro House is a lovely place to stay and a truly charming establishment. Some of the stone used to build it may well have been poached from the castle itself!
