Tynemouth Castle Inn

This impressive, newly refurbished hotel takes prime position overlooking the beautiful North East Coast, close to the charming village of Tynemouth. The hotel formerly known as the Park Hotel for more than 80 years has been given a new lease of life as the Tynemouth Castle Inn.

This art deco-style building has been completely renovated by the Inn Collection Group. Overlooking the famous Longsands Beach, this sprawling hotel now offers 72 bedrooms, many with balconies and a spectacular sea view.

Castle Inn menu

The Inn has a great menu with a huge choice of starters mains and desserts. You can tuck into traditional favourites from a menu that celebrates the best of British pub food alongside handpicked, regional dishes bursting with flavour.  Everything from a T bone steak to pasta is available. Food is served in the substantial bar/restaurant area which runs around the entire length of the hotel. It was absolutely packed on the night we visit. I sampled the roasted beetroot and butternut squash salad followed by the Venison mince and dumplings. Both were delicious. A large outdoor terrace is also available for when those warmer days return.

A comfortable stay

The decor is traditional with the addition of quirky seaside related memorabilia. Surfboards, lobster pictures, seascapes, deckchairs and retro style wall art are everywhere, vibrant and colourful.

The bedrooms are spacious and decorated in muted neutral colours.  The double room features a huge super sized bed which is extremely comfortable. The pub is on its own site and so things are very quiet once the bar is closed which makes for a peaceful night’s sleep.

Tynemouth Castle Inn breakfast

Breakfast is served on the tables in the bright main bar. You start with all the usual pastries, breads, juices and cereals and fruit. There is a full hot buffet breakfast on offer too. I tend to judge a hotel breakfast by the eggs and the quality of the sausages, and they didn’t disappoint. The Tynemouth Castle Inn has a bright lively atmosphere. The locals have clearly been enthusiastic about supporting its transformation. Once the visitors start to arrive again, they will be very happy to discover this new place to eat, drink and stay, smack bang on this stunning coastline.

Dogs at the Inn

The Tynemouth Castle Inn is a dog friendly premises where you and your four-legged friend can stay and relax side by side for drinks and dining.
While some areas of Tynemouth and neighbouring Whitley Bay have seasonal dog restrictions, there is still plenty of beach space for dog-friendly walkies. There are dog treats available in the pub and it’s a great space to relax with man’s best friend by your side.

More seaside specials

Check out brand new next door venues – Oswins and Cones! Next door and part of the hotel complex is Oswin’s fish and chips , Tynemouth’s newest fish and chip takeaway. Next door is Cones, a colourful ice cream parlour. The new offerings are positioning themselves as the place to enjoy traditional seaside treats.

Named after the ancient King of Northumbria, Oswin’s is aiming to become the fish and chip shop of choice, by offering the very best of sustainably sourced fish shop favourites. All fish are cooked in either beef dripping or sunflower oil to allow the shop to cater for all tastes.

Staples like cod and haddock, landed in North Shields and traceable back to the boat that made the catch are all on offer and coated in a golden crispy batter. You can even try the ever-reliable battered sausage, haggis and Smokey, also on the menu. There are also some extra special treats as Oswin’s aims to set itself apart from the competition. Oswin’s Crispy Mix provides a delightful medley of cod, king prawns and squid, whilst monkfish scampi offers a luxury option.

Cones at the Tynemouth castle Inn

Cones next door, is a bright ice cream parlour. It fits in perfectly with the art-deco feel of The Tynemouth Castle Inn. Cones makes its own 20 flavours of gelato fresh on the premises. This is is a paradise for those who prefer a seaside treat to be cool and sweet. Alongside its dazzling array of flavours to choose from, dispensers offer customers the opportunity to add unlimited toppings. Each serve is unique to the person ordering. Amongst delights such as Raspberry Ripple, Mint Chocolate and Espresso Martini there are unique gems including Unicorn, Cheeky Monkey and Nutella.

A Ferrero first

That chocolatey and nutty delight is a further fillip in the new parlour’s cap. This is the only version in the north east which uses a recipe endorsed by maker Ferrero, giving the unmistakable taste and smell of the world-famous spread. Ice Cream appears either in tubs or, as tradition demands, in a wafer or waffle cone. A single scoop of deliciousness costs £3.25. Building on the traditions established by parlours the world over, Cones is also ready to serve a delicious range of hot drinks and affogatos to go with their creamy treats. Cones is open 10am – 6pm and Oswin’s is open 12 – 8pm seven days a week.
