Crab and chilli pizza – a restaurant week highlight!

I was lucky enough to be invited onto a restaurant safari hosted by Sunderland Business Improvement District. Not the usual big five, but a visit to four up and coming bars and restaurants in the Sunderland city cntre. This is a business led, working partnership and aims to revamp the city centre and attract more visits from locals as well as those from further afield.

As a Sunderland restaurant virgin, I was very interested to see what was on offer. We had introductory drinks at one venue, our starters at another, our main at another restaurant and then our dessert somewhere else! Definitely my kind of safari!

Sunderland
Cocktails galore at Ttonic

Ttonic is a spacious cool bar and restaurant. There is a huge selection of cocktails and other drinks on offer here. The friendly staff welcome us with some prosecco, gin and vodka, all accompanied by fireworks attached to the bottles!

The view from 808

Our starter was served at 808. 808  is a cool  Pan Asian tapas eaterie in St Thomas Street in the city centre. The decor is bright and colourful with lots of trees (not real) and cozy booths which are a favourite feature of mine. There is a huge choice of cuisine on the menu and we are really spoiled for choice. We had thai fishcakes, chilli chicken, garlic mushrooms, tempura prawns, patatas bravas, garlic bread, arancini and dirty fries. The dishes just kept on coming!

I  also sampled a tasty Pisco Sour, a sophisticated South American cocktail not often found  on a British cocktail menu.

Proven People next stop

Proven People is a brand new late night food and drink spot in Sunderland. They serve New York style pizza, beers, natural wine, cocktails and play live music on most evenings. We sampled a whole lot of delicious pizzas including an olive and artichoke pizza, a classic pepperoni and my top pick of the night, a delicious crab and chilli pizza, which I hadn’t had before.

Well proven pizzas

I particularly liked the bright modern decor in Caribbean colours. Definitely a bright happy and modern vibe. I’m a sucker for a wall of interesting tiles.

The dessert course at Crumb On In!

Crumb on in is a surprising little cafe situated inside a furniture shop on Maritime place. The friendly local ladies make everything themselves including the local speciality – the pink slice.

Sunderland
Spectacular Scones

Home baking is the name of the game here. Pies and quiches are on offer, as well as some rather tasty looking scones with jam and cream plus a myriad of cakes and sweet treats. They also have a huge variety of teapots on offer. Teapots are often donated by customers. The circus teapot was particularly attractive.

  1. A “Restaurant Safari”. What a marvellous idea! Very pleased to see Sunderland being placed in the spotlight as the city and surrounding area has so much to offer.
